RA Selection Team

RAs are selected by the Residence Life staff which consists of the Director of Residence Life, Residence Directors, and final approval by the Vice President for Student Affairs. The interview process is quite extensive in order to assist the selection team in making their decisions for the RA team. This process involves:

  • Individual interviews (applicant before a RD panel)
  • Group Processes (applicants placed onto teams to work through various initiatives while being reviewed by current RA and RD staff)
  • Reference Forms. There are two required references due: one from a current supervisor, faculty, or staff member; another from a current or former Resident Assistant (if applicant is living on-campus, or has lived on-campus in the past), or a student leader from ASB or the Activities Board.
  • Peer Evaluations: if the applicant lives on-campus, residents from his/her floor or wing will have an opportunity to provide a peer evaluation of the applicant.
  • Second Interviews (if necessary)

RAs are tentatively hired for the fall semester. However, the Residence Life Staff, as well as the selected RA, reserves the right to make changes to the selection results until the RA is actually hired in August 2005, which involves signing a RA agreement form.

RA Compensation

Resident Assistants are provided the following compensation:

  • Single occupancy residence hall room assignment (except for Vanguard Centre RAs who have roommates of their choice)
  • Housing Scholarship (equal to cost of housing)
  • Stipend: currently the stipend is $1500 per academic year for 1st time RAs; $1650 per academic year for 2nd year RAs. Balboa Hall and Newport Hall fourth (4th) floor RAs are considered half-time due to the lesser number of residents. These two positions are paid a stipend of $750 per academic year for 1st time RAs, and $825 per academic year for 2nd year RAs.
  • Incentives: Following the completion of duties and a favorable performance evaluation by the Residence Director staff at the end of each semester, each RD is afforded funds to offer an incentive program to reward stellar job performance.
  • The Perks: though not considered compensation, the Residence Life Staff desires to bless, encourage, and show appreciation to the RA team. For this reason, the Residence Life Staff will fund events and activities that are aimed to demonstrate the staff’s gratitude in the form of random perks (e.g. meals, coffee breaks, fun activities, retreats, gift certificates, and seasonal parties).
