As the world grows smaller and new generations of Christians grow more and more adventurous, Jesus’ call to spread the Gospel ‘to the ends of the earth’ has been answered by an unprecedented number of Christians around the world. And praise God that it has! However, this mass-exodus has the potential to create a ministry vacuum as the word, ‘missions,’ comes to mean, ‘what I do for Jesus when I’m away from home.’ Interestingly, we have reversed the call of Jesus. The Christian mission to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God does not begin with the ends of the earth but, rather, must be rooted in Jerusalem. If we serve Jesus when we’re abroad but serve ourselves when we’re at home, we have not answered Jesus’ call. If our mission does not grow out of a lifestyle of intentional perpetual service at home, in our own Jerusalem, it is without significance.

The Local Outreach program within the Spiritual Formation department exists to provide the Vanguard community with opportunities to answer Jesus’ call. In this program, we do not do missions; we live His mission.
